A Message from the Head
As the Head of School at Brooklyn Heights Montessori, I am thrilled to serve as an introduction to the magic that happens inside the sunny and color-filled classrooms of our school. Having spent the past 28 years in many and varied NYC independent schools as a teacher and leader and having served on the Board of Trustees at BHMS, it is with trained eyes that I am experiencing the uniquely special teaching and joyous learning, which are hallmarks of our school.
Take a tour through the three contiguous buildings which comprise our campus, and you will find not only the smiling, expectant faces of preschool through eighth-grade learners, but classrooms bursting with energy and activity. At the very center of school life, children talk excitedly about new discoveries, proudly and respectfully take care of each other and their learning environments, and are given the time, the support, and the materials to construct knowledge for themselves in ways that imprint 21st century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, leadership, cultural competency, and real life problem solving.
BHMS is firmly grounded in Montessori principles and lives this out through the expertise and guidance of highly trained, Montessori-credentialed teachers. What this means to those less familiar with Maria Montessori’s teachings, is that Montessori trained teachers are experts in child development, brain-based research, and guiding children into their love of lifelong learning and into the best selves they can be. BHMS students from 2 years old through eighth-grade reap the tremendous benefit of trained adults who not only nurture and educate, but who do so by tapping into the intrinsic curiosity within each child. From this strong foundation, teachers guide students to build, grow and become the creative, academically powerful, and intellectually strong graduates who we send off after eighth grade to an impressive and varied array of high school options. While the words “whole child” or “child centered” can be found in countless school mission statements, at BHMS, these are foundational elements with historical roots, grounded in over 100 years of Montessori tradition. We are living this history through our mission each and every day, and we proudly exist as the only preschool through eighth grade Montessori school in the NYC area fully accredited by both the New York State Association of Independent Schools and the American Montessori Society.
We all know the ingredients for an excellent education: trained and supported teachers, carefully prepared environments with tools and materials for exploration and hands-on learning, strong and innovative leadership, and an involved community of parents and caregivers who are dedicated collaborators. BHMS has all of this and more. We are poised to take flight as a community that has grown leaps and bounds since our inception, but has never strayed from our mission to inspire what is best and what is powerfully intellectual in each of our children. I invite you to join us as we take off together, taking pride in where we’ve come and looking forward with excitement and great energy to where we are going. The possibilities for our school and for our children are endless.
