The Brooklyn Heights Montessori School Board of Trustees is made of up parents, parents of alumni and outside educators who volunteer their time to provide vision and leadership for the longterm development and vitality of the school.

Margaret Donohoe Tull

Margaret Donohoe Tull
Board President

Margaret has been a BHMS parent since 2010. Her children are currently in 3rd and 8th grade. Margaret is an attorney, practicing matrimonial and family law. She is a partner at Donohoe Talbert LLP, which she founded in 2007. She has been recognized by Super Lawyers Magazine as one of the top family law attorneys in New York.  Margaret has lectured on family law subjects to the New York State Bar Association and the New York City Bar Association. She holds a B.A. from Yale University and a J.D. from Yale Law School. Margaret joined the Board in 2015 and sits on the Executive Committee and ex officio on all other committees as Board President.


Teepoo Riaz

Teepoo Riaz
Vice President

Teepoo has been a BHMS parent since 2013 and has a daughter in the 4s and a daughter in 3rd grade. Prior to serving as a trustee, he volunteered with the Parents Association.  He is currently the General Counsel and Senior Vice President at FreshDirect, where his responsibilities cover the business spectrum--from corporate governance, finance, regulatory, transactional, real estate, food and beverage to consumer-facing issues. In addition, Teepoo is also an Institute of Culinary Education-trained chef and a former restaurateur. He holds a B.A. from Occidental College, a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, and a LL.M. in Intellectual Property from Cardozo School of Law.  Teepoo joined the Board in 2016 and serves on the Finance and Investment Committee.


Phil Marriott

Phil and his wife, Susannah Taylor, were BHMS parents from 2004-2017.Their three daughters, who are all BHMS alums, now attend Packer Collegiate Institute. Phil worked as a portfolio manager at First Eagle Investment Management from 1996-2017. He holds a B.A. from Cornell University and a M.B.A. from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. Phil has been a BHMS board member since 2013 and chairs the Finance and Investment Committee.


Teresita Levy

Teresita Levy 
Board Secretary

Teresita has been a BHMS parent since 2011. She has a son in 8th grade and a son in 6th grade. Teresita is a professor in the Department of Latin American, Latino and Puerto Rican Studies at Lehman College of the City University of New York. She travels often in her role as Director of International Programs and Global Partnerships for Lehman in order to establish academic partnerships with universities abroad. She holds a B.A. from Rollins College, a M.S. in Counseling from CW Post Campus, Long Island University and a M.Phil and Ph.D in History from the Graduate Center, City University of New York. Prior to joining the board, Teresita was the Parents Association Treasurer for three years. Teresita co-chairs the Institutional Advancement Committee and serves on the Executive Committee. Ask her about cooking, Latin America or the Caribbean, or anything Montessori!


Neely Doshi Cather

Neely Doshi Cather

Neely has been a BHMS parent since 2008. Her children are in kindergarten, 5th grade and 7th grade at BHMS. Neely holds a B.B.A. from Emory University and a M.B.A. from Fordham University. Her past careers include advertising, account management and management and systems implementation consulting. She is a trustee of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy and she helps supervise her family’s investment and real estate portfolio. Neely joined the board in 2012. She has chaired the Building and Grounds Committee for six years and currently sits on the Executive Committee. Neely loves good company, the outdoors and travel.


Cecilia Amrute

Cecilia Amrute 

Cecilia is a longtime Cobble Hill resident and has been a BHMS parent since 2013. She most recently worked in the nonprofit sector and before that in the fashion industry as a Production Manager for J.Crew and Tommy Hilfiger. She holds a B.A. in English from Rutgers University. Cecilia is currently a full-time mom to a Pokemon-obsessed third-grader. She has been a trustee since 2016 and serves on the Buildings and Grounds Committee.


Wini Burkeman

Wini Burkeman 

Wini is a native New Yorker who has been a parent at BHMS for 13 years. Her son, Max, graduated from BHMS in 2014, graduated from LREI high school in 2018 and is currently a freshman at Pratt Institute. Her daughter, Eve, is in 6th grade. Wini co-chaired the school auction for two years and helps with admissions tours. Until last year, she was the owner of the natural skincare line Mcbride Beauty. Wini joined the board in 2017 and serves on the Institutional Advancement Committee.

 


Jon Evans

Jon Evans 

Jon has been an educator and leader in Los Angeles and New York City independent schools for 20 years. He is currently the Head of Lower School at Friends Seminary and has worked as a lower school teacher in grades 2, 3 and 4. John held positions as Curriculum Coordinator and Diversity Coordinator at the Trinity School in Manhattan and was an associate professor of education at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. John holds a B.A. from Miami University, OH, and M.Ed. from Loyola Marymount University. John joined the board in 2017 and serves on the Institutional Advancement Committee. He lives in Williamsburg with his husband, Bill, and their daughter, Dylan Rose.


Nicole Francis

Nicole Francis 

Nicole and her husband, John Guida, have been BHMS parents since 2014. Their son, Oliver, is now in Lower Elementary. Prior to becoming a parent, Nicole owned and operated a contemporary art gallery in Chelsea. She holds a M.A. in modern art history, theory and criticism from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Nicole has been Parent Coordinator for the BHMS Parent Diversity Group since 2016 and is an active member of the BHMS Community Service Committee and Parents Association. This is her first year on the board  and she serves on the Finance and Investment Committee.


Jon Freeman

Jon Freeman

Jon is a clinical psychologist with a background in neuroscience research and is the founder of a local business, The Brooklyn Strategist. Jon started the Strategist as a way of combining his neuroscience interests with his desire to facilitate social responsibility and healthy social interaction within his community. He holds a B.A. from Hobart and William Smith Colleges, a M.A. from New York University and a Ph.D. from the New School for Social Research. His daughter attended BHMS for 12 years and is now in high school at Ethical Culture Fieldston School. Jon joined the Board in 2013 and serves on the Institutional Advancement Committee.


Martha Haakmat

Martha Haakmat 
Head of School 

Martha has taught and led in New York City independent schools for the past 30 years. She has been a lower, middle and upper school educator and has held administrative positions such as Diversity Director and Middle School Head. Martha has served as an independent school trustee and has been a member of various committees for the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS). She was also the founder and director of Educators for Growth and Empowerment (EDGE), a diversity consulting team that presented in schools and at conferences nationwide. Martha currently serves on the Board of Trustees for NYSAIS, the NYC Guild and Early Steps. She is also a faculty member for the Institute for New Heads at the National Association for Independent Schools (NAIS). Martha has three daughters who were educated in the NYC independent school system. Martha holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University and a M.Ed. from Bank Street Graduate School of Education. Martha serves ex officio on all committees as Head of School.


Ilana Levine

Ilana Levine 

Ilana has been a parent at BHMS since 2008 and is the proud mother of Mia in 7th grade, Lucia in 5th grade, and Julian in the 3s. She has volunteered in many activities, including serving as chair of the Parents Association and helping the admissions office give school tours. Ilana served on the Boards of the Fundacion Corona in Bogota, Colombia, and of the American Friends of the Bambi Homes Colombia, where she was president for four years. Ilana has a B.A. in International Relations from Boston University and a M.A. in International Cooperation and Development from La Sorbonne, which she earned while working at UNESCO in Paris. Ilana loves painting, traveling and spending time with family and friends.


Andy McCormick

Andy McCormick 

Andy has been a BHMS parent since 2010. His daughter is now in 6th grade. Andy is a partner at Winslett Studnicky McCormick & Bomser, where he focuses on intellectual property and technology law. Andy holds a B.A. from Colgate University and a J.D. from New York University School of Law. He joined the Board in 2015 and co-chairs the Committee on Trustees. Andy, his husband, Jack, and their daughter, Bee, live in Clinton Hill with their dogs, Gracie and Bean Juice.


Ann Mellow

Ann Mellow

Ann is the Associate Director of the the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES), where she develops educational programs and materials for NAES member schools. From 1995 to 2007, she was head of St. Luke’s School in New York City. Ann began her teaching career at Garrison Forest School in Baltimore, Maryland and subsequently served as middle school head at Poly Prep Country Day School and the Chapin School. A past trustee of the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS), she has chaired accreditation committees and presented frequently at NYSAIS conferences. Ann holds a B.A. from Middlebury College and an M.Ed. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has known BHMS as a bright star in the constellation of Brooklyn independent schools for many years and was happy to join the Board in 2014. Ann serves on the Finance and Investment Committee, the Audit Committee and the Enrollment and Retention Task Force.


Barbara Moore

Barbara Moore

Barbara recently retired after 26 years on the faculty at Packer Collegiate Institute. For most of her career, she taught English and history to 5th and 6th graders. Barbara also directed Packer's Middle School Model Congress program. Her three children all graduated from Packer. Prior to becoming a teacher, Barbara was a lawyer. She holds a B.A. from Harvard University and a J.D. from The University of Pennsylvania. Barbara joined the Board in 2017 co-chairs the Committee on Trustees.

 


Nick Pelliccione

Nick Pelliccione 

Nick is an alum parent. His son, Alex, graduated from BHMS in 2006 and currently is in his fourth year of medical school at New York Medical College. Nick was a part of the Strategic Planning Committee while he was a parent at BHMS. He has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 30 years, heavily invested in research to bring new therapies to patients. Nick has also been involved with the Children's Specialized Hospital Foundation of New Jersey for over 10 years. Nick did his undergraduate work at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, receiving a B.S. in chemistry, and holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Mount Sinai Medical School, City University of New York. He joined the board this year and serves on the Institutional Advancement Committee. In his spare time he enjoys woodworking.


Hope Reeves

Hope Reeves

Hope has been a parent at BHMS since 2007, when her son, Zane Walker, entered the 3s program. His brothers, Otto (5th grade) and Kip (3rd), followed suit. Zane graduated in 2018 and is now in high school at Little Red Elisabeth Irwin (LREI). Hope has served as a Parent Room Rep in the Preschool, Lower El, Upper El and Middle School. This is her first year on the board and she is the co-chair of the Institutional Advancement Committee. Hope graduated from Bates College with a B.A. in psychology and Spanish. She is a freelance newspaper and magazine writer and serves on the boards of several philanthropic foundations.


Rebecca Romano

Rebecca Romano

Rebecca has been a BHMS parent since 2015, and her twin girls, Jillian and Reagan, are now in 3rd grade. Rebecca leads Talent Development for NBCUniversal, which includes talent management, the Global Corporate University and early career pipeline programs. Rebecca holds a B.A. in psychology from Ohio University, a M.S. in personnel and human resource development and a Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago. This is Rebecca’s first year on the board and she serves on the Committee on Trustees. When with family and friends, old and new, Rebecca is always up for new adventures, interesting conversation and a good hearty laugh.


Rachel Stein Dickinson

Rachel Stein Dickinson

Rachel has been a BHMS parent since 2008. She has a son in 8th grade and a daughter in 6th grade. Rachel is the Head of Non-Financial Risk Management, Risk Type Controls for the Americas for Deutsche Bank. She holds a B.A. in urban studies from William Smith College and a M.P.A. from The George Washington University. Rachel is an active advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She became a trustee in 2014 and serves on the Building and Grounds and Audit Committees.


Jeremy Wachalter

Jeremy Wachalter

Jeremy has been a BHMS parent since 2014. His son, Charlie, is in 1st grade and his son, Max, is in 3rd grade. Jeremy is the owner and chef at Cobblestone Catering & Fine Foods, a Brooklyn-based catering company and retail store. Jeremy holds a B.B.A from Florida State University and an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts from the Culinary Institute of America. He joined the Board in 2016 and chairs the Buildings and Grounds Committee.
