The Twos Program at BHMS
Montessori for Two-Year-Olds
The Twos program offers a gentle introduction to Montessori learning and the group classroom experience. Children begin building independence, confidence, language, coordination, and social-emotional awareness through hands-on exploration, practical life activities, sensory experiences, and play. The first step of BHMS’s Montessori Early Childhood Programs, the Twos experience gives young children a warm, developmentally responsive introduction to school.
During the beginning months of school, learning to separate is an important developmental milestone. Teachers work closely with each family to ensure that this first school experience feels supportive, joyful, and responsive to each child’s needs.

What Children Learn in the Twos Program
At age two, classroom experiences are designed to support:
-
Independence and self-confidence
-
Early language and communication skills
-
Concentration and early problem-solving
-
Grace, courtesy, and social-emotional awareness
-
Confidence participating in a classroom community

The Twos program gives toddlers a joyful, curiosity-filled start to school while building the independence, confidence, and early problem-solving skills that support future learning.
A Montessori Classroom Designed for Two-Year-Olds
The Montessori approach to Early Childhood Education is reflected in the organization of the Twos classroom. Our teachers tailor the learning environment to each child’s interests and developmental stage. They focus on helping children take turns, play, make choices, and explore.
Hands-On Materials: Carefully selected Montessori materials support each child’s sense of order, fine motor development, and need to repeat activities as new skills develop.
Sensory Exploration: Teachers encourage children to explore through touching, tasting, moving, listening, observing, and making sound.
Age-Appropriate Independence: Because young children want and need to do things for themselves, the Twos program gives them time to work at their own pace while building language, confidence, and independence.
Early Learning Experiences: Materials are renewed throughout the year and include pre-reading, pre-math, nature studies, art, sensory exploration, and practical life activities.
