EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE

Here, learning to work together, share information, and collaborate for the greater good meets up with having the time and space and opportunities to personally explore and pursue individual interests.

Firmly grounded in the Montessori method and best educational practices, our rigorous academic approach asks students not just to find the answers, but to think critically and independently. The core curriculum of math, language arts, science, culture, history, geography, Spanish, visual and performing arts, and athletics is highly integrated and experiential. Lessons are intriguing, diverse, and designed to keep kids interested and engaged. We teach kids to think in connections as learning things in context makes sense for students. All in all, our programs are designed to prepare students with the creativity, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills essential for success in our complex and rapidly changing world.

In addition, we know that academic excellence goes hand in hand with emotional intelligence and the BHMS program puts the social emotional and character development of the child front and center. Our goal is to help students learn to respect and understand diversity of perspective, fostering empathy, friendships, and community.
Our teachers are dedicated to the learning and growth of each child at BHMS. Many are trained by one of the nation’s American Montessori Society-accredited training centers or well-recognized teacher training programs. 74% of our faculty hold an advanced degree. All teachers are committed to enhancing their professional development through workshops, classes, and special events.
Our preschool through eighth grade program makes Brooklyn Heights Montessori School unique in the New York independent school world. The continuity of our program is designed to support and challenge children in an emotionally safe environment as they build self-confidence and leadership skills that are necessary for the next phase of their educational journey. By eighth grade, our students know and understand how they best learn and are well poised to be an important part of the process to choose a high school where they will continue to be successful and that will prepare them for what lies beyond.
