MONTESSORI PEACE EDUCATION
“Averting war is the work of politicians, establishing peace is the work of education.”
MARIA MONTESSORI

Peace Education is a core element of the Montessori philosophy and is foundational to Maria Montessori’s original pedagogy. At BHMS, Peace Education is a cornerstone of our curriculum. We are committed to fostering a respectful, welcoming community that celebrates human differences and promotes cultural understanding. Our mission is to nurture children’s holistic development so they grow into compassionate individuals prepared and motivated to contribute to a more balanced, fair, and interconnected world.

Our Montessori school community integrates Peace Education into every facet of life, honoring the Montessori principle that it should serve as the foundation for all educational programs and the broader school culture. We aim to create an environment that affirms every individual's unique identity and encourages meaningful collaboration among students, families, and educators.
Peace Education in Practice
Through peace education practices, children at BHMS develop the skills, perspectives, and values they need to adapt to a changing world and work toward building a just and harmonious society. A s educators, we lead by example, embracing intellectual curiosity and open-mindedness while fostering respectful dialogue and active engagement with the global community.

Peace Education Program for Early Childhood Montessori Grades (Pre-School - 3rd)
In early childhood, Peace Education takes shape through a calm, intentional classroom environment where children learn to share, communicate effectively, and resolve conflicts in healthy, respectful ways. While the entire space is designed to foster a peaceful mindset, many classrooms include a designated area, such as a peace table or peace corner, where children can reflect and process emotions. In mixed-age settings, older peers and teachers model constructive strategies for managing frustration, disappointment, and other challenging emotions.

Peace Education Program for Older Montessori Grades (4th - 8th)
As students grow, they are introduced to broader and more complex ideas related to peace, justice, and global citizenship. Older Elementary-aged children may engage in projects that explore real-world issues such as inequality, sustainability, and human rights. Through service learning and partnerships with local organizations, students actively contribute to their communities, developing empathy, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to making a positive impact.

PEACE
AS A
PROCESS
We collaborate to promote and implement best practices in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging across every aspect of the school community.
PEACE
AS A
CULTURE
Peace education is most effective when it serves as the foundation for all educational programs and shapes the overall culture and climate of the school.
PEACE
AS A
DISPOSITION
As educators, we strive to model intellectual curiosity and humility. We engage in respectful dialogue, foster open communication, and cultivate an inclusive Montessori learning environment that embraces diversity in all its forms.
PEACE
AS AN
OUTCOME
Our goal is for children to cultivate the skills, mindsets, and attitudes needed to thrive in an evolving world and to help to build a more just and equitable society.
“The Montessori pedagogy has the explicit goal of educating children to become members of a new world. Wearing, empathy, social responsibility, and solidarity among people [as] the most essential values.”
